چکیده

Improved and unimproved roads can be the primary source of stream sediment in forested watersheds . We assessed dif ferences in product ion of to ta l suspended solia!s (TSS; ppm) f rom four road sulfate condit ions in a Southern Appalachian watershed: (1) a 2-yr-oldpaved surface (P) , (2) an improvedgravel sulfate with control leddrainage and rout ine maintenance (RG), (3) an improvedgravel surjace with erosion andsediment control s tructures ins tal led and rout ine maintenance (IG}, and (4) an unimproved poorly maintained gravel surface (UG). Variat ion was high among and wi thin road sulfate types. The P surface generated the least amount of TSS, which was comparable to control s i tes , while the UG surjace generated the most . The P surface produced signij?cantly less TSS than the UG sudace, but not less than the IGandRGsulfaces. Variation among roads&ace types was re la ted to TSS travel d is tance be low the road, prec ip i ta t ion amount , t ime of year, and the existence of funct ioning erosion and sediment control s tructures . TSS decreased wi th travel d is tance (P = -81% over 38.5 m, IG = -30% over 30.5 m, RG = -89% over 39.4 m, and UG = -22% over 28. I m) . Also in this s tudy we assessed the del ivery of to ta l pe tro leum hydrocarbons (TPH; ppm)from the P surface andfoundconcentrat ions of < OSppm, which are well below published USEPA andNCDENR TPHstandardsforsediment. Paving isan a t t rac t i ve op t ion for reducing maintenance costs and sediment product ion and transport; however , levels of TPH from freshly applied asphalt are unknown. South. J. Appl . Exploring the relationship between land use and surface water quality using multivariate statistics in arid and semi-arid regions

The relative impacts of different types of land use on the surface water quality are yet to be ascertained and quantified. In this paper, the influence of different types of land use on surface water quality is investigated. Rain events samples from different land use in the central plateau, Iran, were analyzed for major ions. Statistical analyses were employed to examine the statistical relati...

Variation of stream temperature among mesoscale habitats within stream reaches: southern Appalachians

Stream mesoscale habitats have systematic topographic relationships to hyporheic flow patterns, which may create predictable temperature variation between mesoscale habitat types. We investigated whether systematic differences in temperature metrics occurred between mesoscale habitats within reaches of small streams tributary to the upper Little Tennessee River, southern Appalachians. Surface w...

A new approach to enhance final surface quality in drilling operation: evaluation of using alumina micro-particle additives on oil-water emulsion cutting fluid

Reaming is a common finishing process for improving the drilled holes surface quality. Choosing an appropriate finishing method in drilling process has a significant effect on the surface quality of holes and in decreasing the process total cost and time. In this study, four similar holes were drilled on the AISI 4340 workpiece with different two pair feed rates. The drilling process was perfor...

Land use impacts on surface water quality by statistical approaches

Surface waters are the most important economic resource for humans which provide water for agricultural, industrial and anthropogenic activities. Surface water quality plays vital role in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Unplanned urbanization, intense agricultural activities and deforestation are positively associated with carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous related water quality parameters. Multip...

Feasibility Study of Reducing the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) from Contaminated Water in Radish Plant (Raphanus Sativus) Using Nano Activated Carbon and Zeolite

Applying Nanoporous Materials is an appropriate method for improving chemical quality of the water due to high surface area, internal porous structure (porosity), high absorption capability of harmful gases and liquids, and capability of reactivating the surface. Therefore, actions were carried out in order to investigate the effect of Activated carbon and Zeolite on reducing the total dissolve...
